Facial reflexology is a therapy which combines acupuncture, reflexology, and neurology. It has been devised by Lone Sorensen a Danish reflexologist and acupuncturist who first trained as a reflexologist in 1978. She then went on to train in kinesiology, acupuncture and cranial sacral therapy.

She has always worked with children who have learning and behavioural issues. Her experience in this field includes working for 2 years at the Kurhuset Rehabilitation Centre in Copenhagen and from her private clinic for 11 years before moving to Argentina in 1989.
Lone lived in Argentina for 12 years, as the first reflexologist in a country where reflexology was unknown, she founded three teaching schools and trained over 2,000 therapists. In her private practice, Lone treated many patients with brain damage and neurological problems. In recognition for her pioneering work using face reflexology, foot and hand reflexology, Lone Sorensen was awarded three honorary titles by the World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) in Argentina in 2001.

Facial reflexology works in close proximity to the brain and therefore the Central Nervous System. Cranial lines and points can be used to enhance the treatment plan for children dealing with developmental difficulties and conditions.

Facial reflexology aims to help support the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of children. The treatment aims to help improve the following:

• Self esteem and confidence
• Capacity to learn by improving attention span and concentration
• Calm hyperactivity by helping to reduce tension and anxiety
• Improve sleep patterns

It also aims to support and address the emotional needs and aspects of the children’s development through puberty. The treatment session lasts 30–45 minutes and allows time for the children to be quiet, to be calm, to relax and to have the focus of attention solely on them. Good results can be achieve using this therapy.

Penny has worked in three schools with children who have special needs and behavioural problems, see What’s New for more information.
